  • External Link: The Bad Plus: Steve Lacy on Monk:

Steve Lacy on Monk includes Lacy’s handwritten notes of advice given to him by Thelonious Monk, including “you’ve got to dig it to dig it, you dig?”

Update: Interesting that Lacy’s notes start off with the bane of my jazz existence: “Just because you’re not a drummer, doesn’t mean that you don’t have to keep time.” Guilty as charged! Always working on that…

  • The Jazz of Stevie Wonder:

View So Tender: Wonder Revisited by the Joe Gilman Trio
I love listening to and playing jazz, and my musical tastes are fairly eclectic. I love old standards and fusion as played by Miles Davis, Return to Forever and Weather Report, among others, and almost everything in between.

I’ve long been wondering how to turn current day popular music into jazz. Many musicians have tried, notably Herbie Hancock. Today I’ve been listening to View So Tender: Wonder Revisited by The Joe Gilman Trio, featuring instrumental versions of songs written or recorded by Stevie Wonder. I particularly like Smile Please and That Girl, but I’m just starting to dig in. Interestingly, both songs are in Sher Music’s New Real Book, Volume 3, so maybe I’ll get to try them soon…

  • Escondido is song of the year (so far…):

I came across Bennie Maupin’s Early Reflections CD earlier this year and fell in love with the sound of his bass clarinet. Escondido is the song that has had the most resonance for me this year. Here’s a taste:
